Bringing Down the House- New Year's 2011

Believe it or not, we've made it through another 365 days and New Year 2011 is upon us. This December 31st, people all over the world will be dressing up, dressing down, gathering, traveling, eating, drinking and celebrating the big countdown this New Year's Eve. So how are you going to celebrate? A big night out? A romantic dinner for two? How about staying in the comfort of your own home with your friends and family? Yeah, we thought that one sounded the best, too.

Here is a quick guide to everything you need to know about hosting a New Year's party:

1. Dress to impress. Actually, you don't necessarily have to dress to impress, but when people think New Year's, they tend to think glamorous. So if you want your guests to look spiffy, then go ahead and run with it. But if you're hosting the party so you can make it as casual as possible, then let your guests know that jeans, or dare we say, sweatpants, are a-okay.

2. The drinks. Now we're talking, people. New Year's is one of the biggest party days of the year for a reason! Stock the fridge, load up the bar and clear out the liquor cabinet. Or, if you don't think you'll be able to handle all your guests yourself, hire an on-site bartender because tonight you're allowed to get a little rowdy. When it comes time to ring in the New Year, champagne is one of those must-haves. Pass around champagne glasses (formal party) or plastic cups (casual party) about five or ten minutes ahead of time to make sure everyone has a toast. If the kiddies haven't passed out on the couch by now, let them join in the festivities with some sparkling grape juice.

3. The food. Again, depending on the route you've chosen, fancy schmancy or laying low, the food should match. No need to bust out the caviar and roasted duck when you plan on spending the night in your pj's on the couch. Keep the snacks simple and casual with the small gatherings. Potlucks are also a great way to go. For the formal parties, though, you might want to think about catering out. Or at the very least, have someone helping you keep the food hot and the drinks cold. These types of events usually include a selection of appetizers throughout most of the night.

4. Decorations! Cheesy silver streamers, party hats, balloons and poppers are fair game at either type of party. Anything that says "Happy New Year" is acceptable. In fact, it's encouraged. Banners and signs will also put people in the celebratory mood. If you don't mind the mess, then pass out noise makers along with the champagne toast. People always like making a lot of noise when the clock strikes 12:00.
