Description

This Bacon Cheeseburger Casserole is a hearty and flavorful dish that’s perfect for busy weeknights. Combining the juicy indulgence of a cheeseburger with the cozy warmth of a casserole, it’s packed with ground beef, melty cheese, and crispy bacon bits, all enveloped in a creamy, flavorful sauce. Plus, hidden veggies make it a nutritious family favorite!

Ingredients

  • Ground beef
  • Onion
  • Garlic
  • Olive oil
  • Salt
  • Black pepper
  • Worcestershire sauce (optional)
  • Dried herbs (optional)
  • Soy sauce (optional)
  • Cream of mushroom soup
  • Milk
  • Butter
  • Flour
  • Shredded cheese
  • Bacon

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Prep Ingredients: If using, cook bacon until crispy, then crumble and set aside. Prepare any optional veggies by finely chopping and pre-cooking them.
  3. Cook Beef Layer: Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add diced onion and cook until softened. Add minced garlic and cook for another minute. Add ground beef, season with salt and pepper, and cook until browned. Drain excess fat. Stir in optional Worcestershire sauce, dried herbs, or soy sauce if using.
  4. Make Cheese Sauce: For the condensed soup method, in a bowl, whisk together the cream of mushroom soup and milk. For the homemade cheese sauce, melt butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Whisk in flour and cook until golden. Slowly whisk in milk, allowing it to thicken between additions. Remove from heat and stir in shredded cheese until melted.
  5. Assemble Casserole: In a greased baking dish, spread the cooked ground beef mixture evenly. Pour cheese sauce over the beef layer. Sprinkle half of the crumbled bacon and shredded cheese on top.
  6. Bake Casserole: Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the edges are bubbly and the top is golden brown.
  7. Optional Broiling: For an extra crispy top, broil the casserole for the last few minutes of cooking, watching closely to prevent burning.
  8. Serve: Let the casserole cool for a few minutes before serving.

Notes

  • Customization: Add finely chopped mushrooms, zucchini, or other veggies to the beef mixture for extra nutrients.
  • Protein Variations: Substitute ground beef with ground turkey or veggie crumbles for a lighter or vegetarian version.
  • Low-Carb Option: Use cauliflower rice instead of breadcrumbs for a carb-conscious twist.
  • Topping Tip: Sprinkle crispy fried onions on top before serving for added texture and flavor.
